What do you pay, and what might insurance cover?

Understand the full cost before you begin. Support, consultations and any medication may be charged separately.

THE ESSENTIALS

The short answer

Check cover for each part of your care. Different rules apply to a GLI, medication and a private programme. A prescription or subscription does not establish cover. The guide below sets out the general rules and questions to ask your insurer.

  • Compare the total cost: intake, consultations, support, any medication and follow-up.
  • Check the specific treatment and provider with your own health insurer.
  • Read the minimum term, cancellation rules and terms for changes to your care.

This is general information, not a personal coverage decision. Your clinician assesses your care; your insurer confirms what your policy covers. Check the current terms, including if you start in a later insurance year.

A GLI may be covered under specific conditions.

An approved combined lifestyle intervention (GLI) for adults may be covered by Dutch basic health insurance. Your GP assesses whether a referral is appropriate.

  • The GLI itself has no statutory co-payment and is exempt from the compulsory deductible.
  • Check which programme and provider your insurer covers. Your policy and the provider’s contract status still affect what is reimbursed.
  • A gym membership is not covered as part of a GLI under basic insurance. Medication and other care are assessed separately.

Questions to take with you

  • Does my policy cover this approved GLI programme with this provider?
  • What referral or prior approval is needed?
  • Which costs fall outside the programme or remain mine to pay?

A prescription does not automatically mean cover.

The rules depend on the medicine and the condition it is prescribed for. Medical suitability and insurance cover are separate assessments.

  • At the review date, Wegovy and Mounjaro are not covered by basic insurance for obesity. Assessment for this use is ongoing; an application for reimbursement is not a decision.
  • Saxenda and Mysimba are covered under specific conditions. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain them; a prescription alone is not enough.
  • Different reimbursement conditions may apply to type 2 diabetes. These do not automatically provide cover for weight loss.
  • Covered medicines may count towards your deductible and may also carry a co-payment. Ask about pharmacy charges too.

Questions to take with you

  • Is this particular medicine covered for this use?
  • What conditions and prior approval apply?
  • What will I pay in deductibles, co-payments and other charges?

Check the costs of each part of your care.

A private programme does not automatically become insured care because a doctor is involved. Get a full cost breakdown and check each part with your insurer.

  • Insured GP care is exempt from the compulsory deductible. Separate tests, medication or other care may count towards it.
  • Ask which appointments, support, check-ups, medicines and follow-up are included. A subscription may comprise several separate services.
  • Ask your insurer to confirm cover for the specific care and provider, including any referral or prior approval needed.

Questions to take with you

  • Which services are insured care and which are private?
  • Is this provider contracted for that care under my policy?
  • What is the full programme cost, including extra appointments and cancellation?

You only choose a topic. That choice stays temporarily in this page’s memory and is not sent to Waisty, an insurer or a care provider. It is not saved or included in a contact request.

Request a complete cost breakdown

Ask the provider to list the costs of the intake, follow-up appointments, support, any tests and medication. Find out which charges are fixed and which may change. Consider travel time and time off work in your own calculations. Looking at several months gives you a clearer sense of what the programme means for your budget.

Check coverage for your circumstances

Insurance coverage depends on the treatment and its conditions. Requirements may also apply to the care pathway or provider. Check current information from Zorginstituut Nederland and discuss your circumstances with your insurer. Being able to receive a treatment does not automatically mean your insurance will cover it.

Ask your insurer specific questions

Give the name of both the treatment and the provider. Ask whether you need a referral or prior approval, whether the provider is contracted and which costs you must pay yourself. Ask whether the Dutch compulsory deductible, or eigen risico, applies. Find out where you can obtain written confirmation and the relevant conditions.

Read the terms for ending a programme

Check the commitment period, notice period and charges for missed appointments. What happens to prepaid support if your treatment changes or ends? Ask whether an advertised lower price applies only to an introductory period. Read the terms before agreeing, so your financial decision reflects the full cost.
